Joseph B. Wirthlin advised, “The wise understand the importance of saving today for a rainy day tomorrow.”

It’s a lot of fun to buy things with money. What are some things you like to buy with your money?

  • Candy
  • Toys
  • Christmas presents
  • Clothes
  • Cars
  • Houses

Sometimes we don’t have enough money to buy something we want like a new bike, so we have to save our money. Adults like Mom and Dad have to save money too for things like new cars and a new house. It’s very important to save money so we can buy the things that we need.

But before we buy a new bike, new clothes or candy, the Lord has asked us to pay Him first. This is called tithing.

    Tithing Rhyme

    “What is tithing?
I will tell you every time.
    Ten cents from a dollar
And a penny from a dime.”

The Lord has asked all of His children to pay 10 percent of their money to the church. This includes your allowance or earned money from babysitting or doing odd jobs. The Church uses tithing to build chapels and temples, and help the poor. So by paying your tithing, you’re helping Heavenly Father build His kingdom here on earth.

After you pay your tithing, you should save your money to serve a mission and attend college. But you should also save for fun things you want like a new bike or a trip to your local amusement park. What are some things you want to save your money for?

How do you add money to a savings account?

You can add money to your savings account anytime you want. The money you add to your account is called a deposit. When you want to deposit or add money to your account, ask your Mom or Dad to take you to your credit union. With their help you’ll fill out a deposit slip telling the credit union how much money you want to add to your account. Then, you give the deposit slip and your money to the “teller,” the person working behind the big desk. Even though you leave your money at the credit union it is always yours and you can get it anytime you want.
